everytime i try to go into the "full version" of windows live hotmail, i am always refreshed back to the "classic version" and i get the error "You are temporarily on the classic version of Windows Live Hotmail due to an error encountered during login. Before trying again, please clear your cache and cookies." I've already multiple times cleared my cache and cookies. This is happening both in firefox and ie6/7 on EVERY computer i go to. what's going on?

I have a similar issue, but it just affects one computer that I own, the other machine still works with the full version. But on the affected machine, Hotmail opens in classic in IE6, and doesn't open at all in Firefox
The problem started about 3/16/08.

I've been having exactly the same problem for about a week now. I'm using Vista and I the problem started the same day I installed Service Pack 1. Is this a coincidence

I have more than 1 Hotmail account and am now being redirected to the 'classic' version in all of my accounts. The 'full' version appears for about a second before this happens.

Me too, it only happens (so far) on my machine at work XP Pro
On the other machine I log on with it works fine
Someone please help? Advise with a fix.

Because this only happens on one of my computers I am wondering if this problem could be caused by a virus or exploit. I have virus scanned all of my computers and not found any virus. Is there anything out there that affects Hotmail Live?

it's something installed on each computer that's for sure. i booted into safe mode with networking and was able to login to the full version. i'll be testing it out now since i now know it's my issue and not Windows Live. if i figure it out i'll post it here.

i found the culprit. it's the HOST file that i was using to block ads. the one i use is from here http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm .. i'm still uncertain what i need to take off from the list, but at least i know what is causing the issue.

i hope this solves it for the rest of you guys.

the culprit acutally could be a combination of me using the HOST file as well as eDexter. more likely eDexter.

I too am using the host file from MVPS.org. I do not use edexter, but do use Homer. It functions like edexter

I found that if I shut off Homer the I can use the full version of Windows Live Hotmail

I am not sure what needs to be changed to all this to work with edexter or Homer. Still looking.

I commented out (removed) the following from my host file and now I can use the full version of Windows Live Hotmail

127.0.0.1 ads1.msn.com

i figured it was one of the ads that was causing the problem .. just couldn't figure out which one .. anyways i switched from edexter & homer to HOSTSMAN. that program has their own HOSTSSERVER which works the same way as edexter & homer. with this program, if you set the display to "nothing" instead of how the other programs use a image or a text, then you won't run into any problems. i believe it is because edexter and homer use images to block out the ads, that there in lies the problem.

I hope someone's still watching these posts ...

I'm using the default hosts file (single entry of -> 127.0.0.1 localhost)
that doesn't block adds, etc and therefore also not using any software like EDEXTER or HOSTSMAN.

Well, i'm still getting an error when I log into hotmail. As an above person mentioned - when I log in, it looks ok for second and then something happens and it shows the message that I'm temporarily in classic version because of an error encountered in login.

I'm in an office. MY computer has a problem - the PUBLIC computer near me has no issues whatsoever.

So, I guess its some kind of setting that's unique to my computer.

ANY IDEAS !????

Thanks, this worked for me, too -- I'm using eDexter. (For others in this same boat, after saving the change in the hosts file, remember to close and re-start your browser so the change can take effect.

Of course, gmail just works.
